CHURCH.026.1Scope and Content
Constructed by 1794; altered ca. 1840; partially restored 1961. James Watt, a grocer, completed the shell of a 2-story house that Watt's predecessor, Charlotte Fenwick, daughter of Edward Fenwick, had inherited. After marrying continental officer Ebenezer Jackson and moving to Florida, she had sold the incomplete tenement to Watt. The 3-story single house retains its basic form but includes significant alterations made in the Greek Revival period, including a parapeted gable framing a tripartite window. Its early natural stuccoed surface shows evidence of original scoring, early lime wash, and paint colors. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
