CHURCH.034.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1847. Built by James McBeth, a Civil War period intendant mayor, before 1847, not far from the creek for which Water Street is named. This tall wooden single house is elevated on a high brick foundation, which protects the principal rooms from rising tides and catches sea breezes. The garage, a luxury in Charleston, is tucked underneath the drawing room. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains HCF staff research notes (scant); FOHG house histories (undated, 1998, 2015); proposed and existing floor plans and elevations from 1996, presumably submitted with an application to the BAR; Rosen and Associates inspection report (1996); 20th century occupancy history from Old Codgers Charleston Address Book; 1886 Earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage assessment.Collection
