Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1743. The son of Anthony Matthews, one of Charleston's early prominent merchants, bought this property in 1743. Containing an asymmetrical interior plan, the house has later alterations including the Federal period wrought-iron balcony and projecting pediment with lunette window. File contains newspaper articles (including 1935, 1978 DYKYC); historical/chain-of-title research notes; site plan and existing elevations (1995); BAR application (2003) (approval status not indicated).
