CHURCH.058.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1754. James Veree, a French Huguenot carpenter, purchased a parcel containing the lots where 56, 58, and 60 Church Street stand in 1754 and probably constructed the house at 58 Church immediately and the dwelling to the north a decade later. The property at 58 Church is the largest of the original houses but contains simple woodwork. James Veree Jr. sold the house to a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Heyward, who apparently used it as a rental property. A single house with 3 front bays, it has been noted for many years for its rear garden, designed in the early 1940s by Mrs. Benjamin (Emily) Whaley with landscape architect Loutrel Briggs. Visitors from around the world still come to visit the garden made famous
in her 1997 book, Mrs. Whaley and Her Charleston Garden during Charleston’s spring and fall house tours. Though Mrs. Whaley passed away in 1998, the house has remained in the
family her daughter, noted Charleston artist Marty Whaley Adams, who continues to maintain the garden.
File contains FOHG garden histories (2005 and undated); existing plan (showing outline of Briggs garden) (Preservation Consultants, 2000).
