62 Church Street (Mary W. Fife House)Entry/Object ID
CHURCH.062.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1817; altered ca. 1840, 1972. Although this site was part of original Charles Town lot 78, earlier houses on the site had disappeared by 1815. Combined at this period with property on East Bay Street and holding "a drain" and well, the owner, John Woddrop, conveyed the lot to the widow Mary W. Fife, who probably built the current house. Fife's son sold the property to druggist James Heilbrun, owner of several other sites along Church Street. Hielbrun operated "sulfur baths" in mid-19th century Charleston, and some have speculated that the reference to the well on this site, under the present house, may hold significance. Much of the interior of the house relates to the late Greek Revival period, indicating substantial renovations during the ownership of Heilbrun or after his sale of the house in 1863. (Poston. Buildings of Charleston.)
