Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1817; altered ca. 1840, 1972. Although this site was part of original Charles Town lot 78, earlier houses on the site had disappeared by 1815. Combined at this period with property on East Bay Street and holding "a drain" and well, the owner, John Woddrop, conveyed the lot to the widow Mary W. Fife, who probably built the current house. Fife's son sold the property to druggist James Heilbrun, owner of several other sites along Church Street. Hielbrun operated "sulfur baths" in mid-19th century Charleston, and some have speculated that the reference to the well on this site, under the present house, may hold significance. Much of the interior of the house relates to the late Greek Revival period, indicating substantial renovations during the ownership of Heilbrun or after his sale of the house in 1863. (Poston. Buildings of Charleston.) Files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence; Part I certification (National Register) (cover page only); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; documentation related to the Loutrel Briggs garden plan (specifications, bid for planting, 1973-1974); BAR application (3/2001), which include photos and floor plans and door elevations; statement of significance, description of physical appearance, and chain-of-title research (Albee, 2001); chain-of-title research notes (Harlan Greene, SCHS, undated); FOHG house histories (one ca. 1980s?, one ca. 1990s?, 2006); Sanborn maps (1984, 1888, 1902, 1944, 1951); real estate information packet (2000) which includes floor plans and photos; draft of article by homeowner about the restoration of the garden (2016). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
