Scope and Content

Constructed, ca. 1721-40; various 20th century renovations. This Brewton family dwelling has long been cited as the oldest surviving single house in Charleston, but it may have been rebuilt after the fire of 1740. Col. Robert Brewton, wealthy politician, merchant, and powder receiver, constructed it and lived here until selling the property to his brother-in-law, Jordan Roche. The 3-bay structure, with its fine quoins and molded brick cornice, has undergone some change in the 20th century, including the removal of late-19th century piazzas and the addition of a modern masonry coating over the old stucco surface. Barnwell and Bailey and Mr. Henry Staat (undated), including chain-of-title research and plats; house history from Architectural Guide to Charleston (Simons & Thomas); newspaper articles (including 1975 DYKYC); excerpt from Marion's The Charleston Story; National Register Nomination Form; Rosen and Associates inspection report (2001); photograph of a portrait of Robert Brewton (1759). (Early address was 45 Church Street.)
