CHURCH.073.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1733; altered ca. 1920. Exemplary of 18th century construction techniques used within the walled city, this building formerly had a third story now removed. Although altered early in the 20th century, its small scale and rear work yard suggest an original floor plan consisting of 2 rooms topped by either 1 or 2 stories. Most notable is the presence of an early central chimney, a construction feature replaced by party wall chimneys in late-18th and 19th century Charleston single houses. Dr. Thomas Dale was a physician particularly noted for his literary achievements in early colonial Charleston. Upon his marriage to Mary Brewton this house was given as a gift by her father, Miles Brewton I. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
