CHURCH.076-78.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1785; various 19th century renovations. Two post revolutionary dwellings have been combined in recent years as one residence. Both are brick with early stucco coatings. While the house at 76 Church has a significant clay pantile roof, its neighbor has long been noted for its unusually old-fashioned steep roofline (called "medieval" by Albert Simons and Samuel Lapham) and bulky early chimneys. The cast-iron balcony at 78 Church probably dates from the 1820s. The house at 76 Church is a designated National Historic Landmark, as DuBose Heyward wrote the novel Porgy here. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; newspaper articles (including 1930 DYKYC); photocopies of photos; copy of drawing of 78 Church Street (by Alice Huger Smith); National Register Nomination Form; Rosen and Associates inspection report (2006) for 78 Church; copy of 1808 plat showing single house and dependencies.Collection
