CHURCH.086.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1783; restored 1950. Built by Isaac Mazyck III after the fire of 1778, this 3-story stucco house has a wide fanlighted entry on the south end of the front facade that accesses a side passage running the length of the dwelling, an unusual feature for this period. A second-floor drawing room follows the lead of earlier merchant houses on Church Street and stretches across the entire front of the building. Mazyck, grandson of a Huguenot immigrant, died soon after its completion and bequeathed the house to his daughter, Mrs. Robert Wilson. She and her descendants rented the property as an office and residence to a series of tenants for more than a century. A small house to the north was demolished in the early-19th century, and the property was divided with 90 Church Street, thus permitting the large gates and drive. Two brick kitchen buildings, of differing periods, flank a rear paved courtyard. A missing section of the later stucco on the northwest corner of the house reveals the original Flemish-bonded brick with finely tooled lime mortar. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
