CHURCH.103.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1816-20. This parcel owned by Joel Poinsett, the noted Charlestonian who was Ambassador to Mexico and for whom the poinsettia is named, contained "two old brick buildings" at the time of its sale to George Hoffman in 1816. Hoffman apparently razed the old structures and built the present edifice prior to an 1825 mortgage referring to a 3-story brick building. This Flemish-bond brick single house retains evidence of a surviving shop on the ground story and residence above, and boasts splendid original window lintels and sashes. Its north piazzas were later enclosed.
File contains HCF staff research notes (scant); correspondence (1997, 2001) related to its use as an art gallery (Robert Hicklin).
