CHURCH.131.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1809. Originally purchased by Alexander Calder, the former owner of nearby Planter's Hotel, this parcel was sold to Calder's son-in-law, a merchant tailor, who constructed this building with commercial space on the first floor and living quarters above. While the first floor is relatively restrained, the second floor has exuberant Neoclassical woodwork. Calder lived and worked here until his death in 1824. The house was briefly owned by the Confederate secretary of the Treasury George Trenholm (who owned many investment properties), but after the war it declined into a slum. Restored in 1929, the 3-bay brick house still retains the central front door which originally led into the shop space from the street, a relatively unusual survival. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report which includes site analysis, maps, floor plans, etc.; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; proposal for brick restoration work, with photographs; FOHG house histories (1948, 1979, undated); newspaper article; Rosen and Associates inspection report (1990).
