Scope and Content

This 3-story stuccoed brick Charleston single house was built in the mid-1700s by the French Huguenot Church. Originally constructed of brick, this building now has been stuccoed over. The house has 2 bays on the street, and was built with a 2-story piazza on both the south and east sides. Now, the kitchen addition has taken the place of the eastern piazza. The double-tiered side piazza and street door have detailing indicating that they were added ca. 1850. At one time, the front room on Church Street was used as a shop. Most of the woodwork in the house has remained intact; however, there was some redecorating during the 1850s. In 1974-75, the house was renovated, and the 1850 woodwork was replaced with reproductions of the original decoration. However, in the principal rooms, the fireplace surrounds are original. This is the oldest surviving structure built by the French Huguenot Church; the house predates the present Church, immediately to the north that was built between 1844-45. The dwelling served the Church as a rectory and a rental property until 1871. File contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report (1985); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; site improvement plan (drawings, 1984); drawings of gate (presumably submitted with related request for alteration); FOHG house history and notes (1976); chain-of-title research information (1871-1974). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
