CHURCH.141.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1740; restored 1920s. Two of Charleston's earliest townhouses, these buildings, 2½ stories and two rooms deep, are largely constructed of Bermuda stone, a coquina stone imported from the Caribbean. Early research indicates that merchant Alexander Perronneau built the buildings as investments, probably after the fire of 1740. Unheated front rooms and full cellar with a large cooking fireplace and bake oven suggest that the tenement at 141 Church was built as a combination commercial building and residence with the family quarters located behind the shop room opening onto the street. It was owned by the well-to-do craftsman and planter Paul Smiser in the late-18th century and described in his will as "my Bermudian stone tenement in New Church Street." (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
