Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1740; restored 1920s. Two of Charleston's earliest townhouses, these buildings, 2½ stories and two rooms deep, are largely constructed of Bermuda stone, a coquina stone imported from the Caribbean. Early research indicates that merchant Alexander Perronneau built the buildings as investments, probably after the fire of 1740. Unheated front rooms and full cellar with a large cooking fireplace and bake oven suggest that the tenement at 141 Church was built as a combination commercial building and residence with the family quarters located behind the shop room opening onto the street. It was owned by the well-to-do craftsman and planter Paul Smiser in the late-18th century and described in his will as "my Bermudian stone tenement in New Church Street." (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report; correspondence related to the tax credit; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; invitation to bid on repairs (2001); correspondence (2000) related to the effects of nearby construction; sample of original exterior stucco; architectural drawing/floor plan (otherwise unidentified except for address); FOHG house histories (1973, 1976); other narrative histories including field investigations(Willie Graham & Orlando Ridout) and observations by Professor Bernard L. Herman; brief building assessment (Edward Chappell, 1995); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; Will of Paul Smiser; reference information regarding Bermuda stone. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
