CHURCH.181.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1850. A one-story rectangular stuccoed brick commercial structure with a recent warehouse addition to the west. The low-pitched truncated gable composition roof is concealed at its north end by a shaped parapet, with stuccoed corbelled cap, and along its east side by a low flat parapet. A centrally placed monitor, with paired sash windows and a hipped roof, extends along much of the roof. The warehouse building is located on the site of the Williams Building, a four-story Greek Revival style commercial range and bank complex that extended along much of this block of Hayne Street. Constructed as a warehouse for Goldsmith and Loeb, Wool, Cotton, Hides, and Cotton Tie Manufacturers; incorporated the elaborate former Church Street bank entrance from the Williams Building complex. Subsequent tenants have included the C.D. Franke Carriage Works, who occupied the building from 1890-1918. It is noted for its ornate doorway. A fire gutted the building in 1988 and it was since renovated into a Hawthorn Suites, Doubletree Inn.
File contains National Register certification application (Part I); newspaper articles (including DYKYC), captioned photo after a 1988 fire, and article about architectural "ruins" including 494 King (1989); photocopies of images (historic and recent); drawing of doorway with planned changes, presumably submitted with BAR application (?).Collection
