Coming Street is named for Mrs. Affra Harleston Coming, widow of John Coming, who came on the ship Carolina in 1670. Coming Street became the most popular residential address for Charleston's free black or "mulatto elite" population in the years before 1861. File contains copy of Census (no date provided) for Coming Street; handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant) for 23 Coming Street, 29 Coming Street, 36 Coming Street, 57 Coming Street, 70 Coming Street, 72 Coming Street, 100 Coming Street, 135 Coming Street; newspaper article about gas station to be constructed on site of 86 Coming Street (DYKYC 1936).
