Constructed ca. 1839; rehabilitated 1991. This 2½ story wood Charleston single house constructed as an investment for Mrs. Sarah Cohrs, stands on a high stuccoed brick foundation and has side Tuscan piazzas, gable roof with a tripartite window, and paired chimneys with later Gothic-style arched hoods. It bears all characteristics of typical Charleston single houses of the Greek Revival period. By contrast, the brick house to the south at 15 Coming Street, follows the side-hall plan with pilaster caps supporting the base of the gable roof. Both of these houses experienced severe deterioration since the 1960s, although 17 Coming has undergone historical rehabilitation. 15 Coming remains divided into apartments, with a facade that was poorly rebuilt in the 1980s. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains newspaper article referencing restoration award (1995); 1886 earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage assessment.
