COMING.038.1Scope and Content
Bearing a striking resemblance to its nearby neighbor at 28 Coming Street, the house at 38 Coming Street was first built by John Scott in 1771 on a glebe land leased by Scott. Remodeled in the Greek Revival manner in the 1830s, its interior, nonetheless, retains some Georgian woodwork, and it still possesses its 18th century hipped dormers and beaded weatherboarding. It is one of five houses that became home in the 1970s to various sororities at the College of Charleston; also known as the John Scott House.
File contains FOHG house history (undated); other narrative history (source not indicated); excerpt from "Gems in the Crown (Lightsey, 1993); handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant).
