COMING.040.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1851; renovated in 1972. William J. Rivers, founder of the South Carolina Historical Society and author of the most important history of the state published in the 19th century, built this fine 2½ story brick dwelling in 1851 while running a private school nearby. Rivers became a professor of classical languages in 1857 at the University of South Carolina and moved to Columbia, leaving behind an elite Charleston circle, including neighbors Hugh Swinton Legare, Christopher G. Memminger, and Dr. John Bachman. The house retains its finely pointed Flemish bond front facade with brick jack arches, red sandstone window sills, belt courses, and a closed front gable with a central tripartite window. The architrave in the side piazza screen, probably original, has unusually large Rococo style console brackets supporting the overhanging lintel. Used by the College of Charleston for administrative offices. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house history (undated); other narrative history (source not indicated); excerpt from "Gems in the Crown" (Lightsey, 1993); historical/chain-of-title research notes (author not identified); handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant).Collection
