Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1889; rehabilitated 1979-80. Although Alexander Wilson owned this and the properties to the north in this block from the 1870s until the 1880s, only a few small one-story houses occupied the site. In 1884 James Redding bought this property (and its neighbor at 140 Coming Street) from Wilson's heir, as well as acquiring the sites of 42, 44, 46, 48, and 50 Warren Street. 140 and 142 Coming Street mirror the general single house plan for Wilson's tenements, including double-tiered piazzas screened by Italianate style doorways and simple wood sheathing, 6-over-6 sash windows, and double, Gothic hooded chimneys. Most of the Warren Street dwellings, constructed between 1890 and 1898, follow the same plan, although Redding or a subsequent owner added a roof overhang with brackets and square-cut decoration in the Queen Anne manner to 50 Warren Street. Another investor, J. H. Mindermann, built an L-shaped single house at 138 Coming Street. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the covenant on the property; 1984 appraisal); annual inspection reports; correspondence and other documentation related to the management of the property; title research; 1979 plat; copy of HCF covenant information card; documentation of HCF's purchase and rehabilitation of the property. See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
