4 Council Street (Richard Morris House)Entry/Object ID
COUNCIL.004.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1881. Three nearly identical single houses anchor the corner of Council and Tradd Streets, at 2-6 Council Street. Richard J. Morris, a house furnishings dealer, constructed these buildings as an investment in 1881. Each of the dwellings retains its closed gable ends and two-story side piazzas. 4 Council Street lost its piazza screen in the conversion of the house to a duplex some years ago. (The house at 2 Council Street retains an original late-Greek Revival architrave in the piazza screen, matching that at 6 Council Street, although the latter now features an overhanging pediment. By contrast with these regularly proportioned structures, the investor Henry Klaven built the diminutive 2-bay single house at 8 Council Street with Queen Anne style detailing.) (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
