Scope and Content

23 Chalmers Street, a building now incorporated into the complex of buildings called the Confederate Home and College (60-64 Broad Street), served as a courthouse for both the United States and later, for the Confederate States of America. Built as a tenement in the early 19th century, 23 Chalmers housed the U.S. District Court from 1845-1860. A 3-story stuccoed brick building was a freestanding structure during its use as the U.S. District Court. See also, Confederate Home and College records.
