Scope and Content

Box 1 contains the following: Folder 1: Timelines Various historical timelines of the Aiken Rhett House and associated family members. Includes a short timeline of the Aiken Rhett House history composed by the Charleston Museum and the extensive timeline of the Historic Charleston Foundation. Folder 2: Biographical Information Biographical and historical information relating to the associated family members of the Aiken Rhett House (including John Robinson, William Aiken Jr. and Sr., Harriet Lowndes Aiken, Albred Rhett, D. Wyatt Aiken, ), gathered from various modern sources including the Charleston Museum docent notebook, 20th century publications on Charleston general and Civil War history, excerpts from numerous biographical publications on South Carolina leaders and politicians, and short un-published biographies written by reliable local historians. (Several articles on PDF; see Media tab.) Folder 3: Genealogical Information - Robinson Includes a genealogical list of the descendants of John Robinson, Jr. of unknown origins; excerpts related to John F. Robinson and Suzanne Thomas taken from the report entitled "A History of the Ancestral Families of Russell Daniel Zimmerman (1868-1952) and his wife, Anne Frezil Thomas (1880-1970)" by Richard N. Cote (dated 1982). Folder 4: Genealogical Information - Aiken Contains a number of useful sources on the family of James Aiken, father of William Aiken, Sr. and David Aiken, including copies of extensive genealogical research undertaken by Robert Bentham Simons in the preparation of his book on the Simons family, published in 1954 (available in HCF's library), as well as other information kept in the Simons family files at the South Carolina Historical Society. Also includes copies of the family trees composed and maintained by the Historic Charleston Foundation, information from the Aiken family files at the South Carolina Historical Society, and a photocopy of a manuscript page out of the Aiken family bible giving key dates on several Aiken family members. Also contains genealogical information on Aiken family members provided to HCF from Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hutson including correspondence from Claude Pritchard, information from and about the Clan Aikins Society. Folder 5: Genealogical Information - Rhett Contains genealogical information gathered from various sources, including the Rhett family files at the South Carolina Historical Society and the Aiken Rhett papers at the Charleston Museum. Includes information found in the Aiken family bible, a drawing of the Rhett family coat of arms, and copies of short articles with manuscript notes from several genealogical publications. Folder 6: Scholarly Articles & Research Professional and academic scholarly articles, theses, dissertations, books, etc., and miscellaneous reports on the Aiken-Rhett family, the Aiken Rhett House, Jehossee Island, etc. Includes, among others, work by John Michael Vlach on the ARH as an "urban plantation," Maurie McInnis on the expression of classical principles in Charleston architecture, Chalmers Gaston Davidson on South Carolina planters in the antebellum period, Martha Zierden on the archaeology of the elite Charleston townhouse and on the Aiken Rhett House in particular, Suzanne Cameron Linder on Jehossee Island; A.S. Salley on the Maybank Family; a compilation of research entitled "Jehossee Island" containing excerpts from The Courier by Viator about Jehossee plantation (dated 1844) and a report (unattributed) about Gov. and Mrs. Aiken (with bibliographical references) (from Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hutson); excerpt entitled "Rice Estate of Gov. Aiken of S.C." from J.D.R. DeBow's The Industrial Resources, statistics, etc., of the United States... (ca. 1865); excerpt entitled "Jehossee Island and the Edisto Agriculture Society" from Ruffin's Agriculture, Geology, and Society in Antebellum South Carolina; Solon Robinson's ca. 1850 account, "Visit to Jehossee Island, Rice Plantation of Ex-Governor Aiken [sic]"; "The University of Minnesota's Heritage of Slavery" (Christopher P. Lehman, 2016, Hennepin History, 2016). Folder 7: Archaeology Reports "An Archaeological Interpretation of Elite Townhouse Sites in Charleston, South Carolina, 1770-1850" by Martha Zierden and Jeanne A. Calhoun (1990); "Aiken-Rhett House: Summary of Archaeological Research" by Martha Zierden (2001) (available also as PDF on Media tab). See also "Outside of Town: Preliminary Investigation of the Aiken-Rhett House" (Zierden, Calhoun, Hack, 1986) and "Aiken-Rhett House: Archaeological Research" (Zierden, 2003). Folder 8: On-site Observations/Notes Write-ups or notes produced from on-site visits conducted by various consultants and experts. Includes an article by J. Kenneth Jones of the Charleston Museum entitled "The First Visit" from 1975, observations and hypotheses of Edward Chappell on the service buildings from November of 1994, and observations and hypotheses of Carl Lounsbury on the service buildings and property wall from 2001. Folder 9: National Register Nomination Contains a photocopy of the National Register Nomination for the Aiken Rhett House prepared by Kappy McNulty in 1977, and related documentation, including the award certificate (dated 11/21/1977).
