Scope and Content

Box 2 contains the following: Folder 1: Collections Contains secondary source material on the objects in or associated with the Aiken Rhett House, including articles on Hiram Powers sculpture and Salvator Rosa, and some miscellaneous notes from the Charleston Museum decent notebook on various pieces. Folder 2: Newspaper Clippings Primarily clippings from local newspapers from the mid-20th century to the present pertaining to the Aiken Rhett House and associated properties and/or interests (e.g., S.C. Railroad, 8-10 Green Street). Folder 3: Popular (Informal) Articles Articles from various popular (non-academic) publications. Includes articles for Southern Accents, Victoria, the Preservation Society's newsletter Preservation Progress, The National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Preservation magazine, The Magazine Antiques (1/1991), and excerpts from Alice Ravenel Huger Smith's The Dwelling Houses of Charleston. Folder 4: General House Histories Containing more general, shorter architectural histories of the Aiken Rhett House generally composed in-house by the Charleston Museum or Historic Charleston Foundation, as well as several of unknown origins. Folder 5: House Museum/Docent Information Contains generally in-house scripts, guides, and other miscellaneous information about the Aiken Rhett House intended for the education of docents. (See ELIZABETH.048.5.7 for HCF Tours information.) Folder 6: Charleston Museum Docent Guide Includes a photocopy of the complete Charleston Museum docent guide from the 1970s, and other House/Family information compiled by the Charleston Museum. Folder 7: Brochures, Pamphlets, etc. Contains originals or copies of brochures on the Aiken Rhett House. Folder 8: Oral Accounts Currently containing several short recorded oral accounts of the Aiken Rhett House collected by the Charleston Museum. Folder 9: Comparables Containing information on comparable architectural examples to the Aiken Rhett House. Currently includes a docent's note on the Old Merchant's House in New York City, and copies from Asher Benjamin's The Practice of Architecture from 1835; excerpts from Modern Finishings for Rooms by W.F. Pocock, architect; and advertisement for George O. Stevens, manufacturer and dealer in building materials. Folder 10: Flat Rock: "Flat Rock," Sadie Patton Contains a small, undated publication on the history of Flat Rock, NC, by Sadie Smathers Patton. Folder 11: Flat Rock: "Historic Flat Rock," Blanche Marsh Contains a small book, published in 1961, on the history of Flat Rock, NC, by Blanche Marsh, and including several photographs of Rhett properties in Flat Rock. Folder 12: Flat Rock: "The History of Flat Rock in Needlework" Contains a small publication, published in 1999, about a large quilt depicting various landmarks of Flat Rock, including Rhett's Mill and the Church of St. John in the Wilderness. Folder 13: Flat Rock: "Flat Rock, NC: A Sketch of the Past" Contains a small publication on historic buildings of Flat Rock, NC, including several early photographs. Folder 14: Flat Rock: Misc. Pamphlet from the Church of St. John in the Wilderness; excerpt from "Archaeological Survey at the Pinckney House Site, Henderson County, North Carolina" [a/k/a Hemlocks property #6] (Blue Ridge Archaeological Consultants, 2009).
