CUMBERLAND.6-8.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1789-1804; renovated 1960s. The lower arched openings of this stuccoed masonry building survive as the only indication of its former use as a range of four 3-story stores and factor's offices. Theodore Gaillard, the son of a prominent merchant and planter who bought the site in 1777 with the confiscation of the loyalist Wragg family's wharf, in turn had his property confiscated by South Carolina authorities due to his own tory leanings during the British occupation of Charleston. Sold to John Vanderhorst, it was repurchased by Theodore Gaillard Jr. at auction in 1789. The younger Gaillard then lived at 198 East Bay Street, joining the rest of his family in Harleston Village. Gaillard sold the completed warehouses to John Christopher Faber in 1804, and they were later known as Faber's North Range. The third floor was removed due to damage during the earthquake of 1886 and late 20th century renovations as office buildings have obscured many of the early characteristics of this site.
