9 Dereef Court (United Missionary Chapel)Entry/Object ID
DEREEF.009.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1880. This small vernacular wood church was built on Dereef's, formerly Lobe's, Court in the late 19th century. Original wooden churches and chapels, once so prevalent in the west side of Charleston, have sometimes been demolished or altered with brick veneering in recent decades. Abandoned for several decades, it was to be rehabilitated by the City of Charleston as a community center for the adjacent park. (Cataloger's note: this brief history, by Jonathan Poston, is undated, so no indication as to when--or if--the rehabilitation was undertaken.)
May also be known as 7 Dereef Court.
File contains brief narrative history (above); 2004 BAR application regarding the relocation of the chapel that includes a brief history, Sanborn Maps, City property map, deeds and other legal documents (photocopies); newspaper articles about Dereef Park.
