Scope and Content

The origin of the name Drake Street is not documented. The street was one of the original streets of Hampstead, laid out for Henry Laurens in 1789. (City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual). File contains captioned photograph of the brick wall and steel stairways of the American Tobacco Co. building (106 Drake Street); photocopy of ca. 1985 photograph of 61 Drake Street (presumably from SCDAH architectural inventory); house history of 86-90 Drake Street (part of Bischoff's Square) from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); copies of 1902 Sanborn Maps showing Drake Street properties; correspondence and other documentation relating to the conveyance of Drake Street properties to Historic Charleston Foundation from the Housing Authority of the City of Charleston in 1965-1966 (referred to as the "Faber Block": 52 Drake, 54 Drake, 58-60 Drake, 62 Drake).
