EBAY.053.1Scope and Content
Chartered in 1852 under authority of the SC General Assembly, the clubhouse was located at 45 Meeting Street on land now part of the post office parking lot, destroyed in the earthquake of 1886. The club reopened at its new location at 3 Meeting Street. Membership dwindled but in 1927, the Meeting Street clubhouse was sold and members moved to 22 South Battery. In the early 1930s, the location changed again, this time to 45 East Bay Street. Membership began to increase and in 1938, the club relocated to the middle apartment of Vanderhorst Row (78 East Bay Street). It would be 1958 until the Charleston Club owned its own building again, when it moved to 53 East Bay Street. Standing next to its slightly larger neighbor at 55 East Bay Street, this house was constructed in the mid 1780s and ornamented by a dentiled brick cornice and wrought-iron balcony with a crossed star center panel. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
