Name/Title
The British Occupation of Charleston, 1780-1782Entry/Object ID
2009.002.008Description
Takes issue with the historical interpretation that the British soldiers provoked South Carolinians into forceful resistance by their perfidy, cruelty, and tyranny, and instead, ill planning, lack of communication, and inefficiency on the part of both the British military and bureaucracy are indicted as the chief culprits. Rather than leading to the effective restoration of royal government in SC, the possession of Charleston confirmed Great Britain's inability to successfully govern the colonies.
