Francis Hayman was one of the most important painters of his generation. His work encompassed several of the newer genres of painting that developed in the middle decades of the 18th century. He was also a prolific book illustrator and pioneer in the field of history painting. This book is the first full study of Hayman's work, consisting of an introduction to his life and career as well as over 100 of his most important paintings, drawings and book illustrations, reproduced and discussed at length. A complete checklist of all his works is also included.
