COMING.023.1Description
B&W photograph of the Mary Gray House (23 Coming Street), front elevation.
Constructed ca. 1830. A widow, Mary Gray, acquired this house in 1841 from James Stevens, the trustee for the "marriage settlement" of Ann Hunt and her husband, Nathaniel Hunt. The dwelling passed through various owners, but it was W.K. Brown who held it until the end of the 19th century. The early-19th century single house form -- with nine-over-nine windows on the first story, surmounted by an open gable roof with three projecting dormers -- was altered in the late-19th century by construction of a north addition with a new Italianate style entry. These alterations transformed the structure into a duplex. The property to the south at 21 Coming Street passed as a vacant lot to Mrs. Gray when she acquired 23 Coming Street. Either John Zanoga or W.K. Brown built the two-story Italianate style dwelling here in the 1870s. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)Collection
