EBAY.057.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1783; altered and renovated mid- and late-20th century. Thomas Pinckney, the founder of Charleston's leading political family, bought this lot with a house already built, shortly after his arrival in 1692. The original house on the site burned in 1778, and the present stuccoed brick dwelling has been dated to 1783. Stylistically similar to other post-Revolutionary houses in Charleston, particularly the Simpson house across the alley to the south, the 3-story house with its low hipped roof also has a wrought-iron balcony on the second floor. General Pinckney lived at 14 George Street from the 1790s onward, and this served as rental property, although he attempted to sell it to a tenant at this juncture. The house subsequently became the home and grocery store of William Porter in 1826, thus explaining the large shop window opening on the first floor. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); Market Value Appraisal (report by Atlantic Appraisals dated as of Dec. 29, 1997) that includes photos, site analysis, market value, etc.; annual inspection reports and correspondence related to the management of the property; FOHG house histories; other narrative histories, including Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; historical/chain-of-title research; some Pinckney Family research.
