Letter from South Carolina
Profitable Advice for Rich and PoorDescription
The first modern edition of 2 of the most informative of the many promotional tracts there were written in an effort to attract immigrants to the American colonies during the earlier years of settlement, A Letter from South Carolina (London, 1710) by Thomas Nairne, and Profitable Advice for Rich and Poor (London, 1712) by John Norris. Together these tracts provide the fullest and most systematic contemporary discussion of the nature and conditions of South Carolina during its early years of English settlement, and they illuminate the psychology that tempted Europeans to these colonies.
