132 East Bay Street (Gabriel Manigault Tenement)Entry/Object ID
EBAY.132.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1797; renovated ca. 1890-1900; rehabilitated 1983. Charleston's wealthy "gentleman architect" Gabriel Manigault probably designed and built this structure sometime after purchasing the property as an investment in 1797. Originally a hip roofed, brick double tenement of 3 stories, the structure's Flemish-bonded brick side walls and fenestration remain on the north and south elevations. A dramatic redesign of the front facade from the late-19th century with roughcut sandstone masks Manigault's original scheme yet provides an example of a heavily rusticated Victorian facade of the period.
File contains report entitled 132-134 East Bay Street: A Brief History by Robert P. Stockton (10/30/1983); copy of photo of East Bay Street looking north (ca. 1920) (from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book, vol. 4).Collection
