Charleston Scrapbook of Miss Charlotte H. SmithEntry/Object ID
2007.020.9Scope and Content
Scrapbook compiled by Miss Charlotte H. Smith, a client of the donor who came into possession of it after Miss Smith died. Consists mostly of newspaper and magazine articles glued to pages. Many are captioned photographs of various Charleston houses and buildings, many of which were clipped from the News & Courier's "Charleston Pictorial Exhibit" (November 1937, photos by Frances Benjamin Johnston) (see 2007.020.9 and 18); articles about notable Charleston persons, history, and attractions; and two maps. There are some articles loose in the file. Miss Hill resided at 8 St. Michael's Alley (site of James L. Petigru's office) and there is a photograph of the building and articles about it and Petigru. Very few items are dated; however, the earliest date indicated is 1936 and the latest 1965. Because of the poor condition of the pages (stained, fragile, and acidic) and of the binder, the pages were removed from the binder and may be photocopied and/or scanned and dispersed throughout property and other relevant files. Sample pages have been scanned for this record.
