Scope and Content

Constructed 1834-37; altered 1890s; rehabilitated 1985. Thomas Roper left this site to his son Robert William, with the stipulation that if he died "without issue," then the property was to be devised to the South Carolina Medical Society. Originally constructed by the younger Roper as a 3-story double tenement, the building was reduced to 2 stories. Owned by the Medical Society for decades, the property was refaced with Italianate style double shop front, pedimented window hoods, and a pressed metal entablature for Melchers & Company, wholesale grocers and dealers in Carolina rice. After the building deteriorated with East Bay Street for most of the mid-20th century, the cornice was removed, but the remaining elements were restored when the building was rehabilitated as shops and offices in the mid-1980s. Building number fluctuates from the end of the 19th century to the turn of the 20th century. See Sanborn Maps. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property (1984) including related correspondence, Confirmation of Understanding, and Consent & Agreement as to later (1999) use of the building; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, correspondence related to the management of the property, and BAR submissions; HCF staff research notes (scant); copy of business advertisement for Melchers & Co. with image from "Resources & Attractions of Charleston" (ca. 1898); magazine article about Cypress restaurant ("before and after," Local Palate, 2012); . See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
