Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1800; altered ca. 1830-50; rehabilitated 1980s. This building stands on a lot formerly bordering a Cooper River wharf owned after the Revolution by Commodore Alexander Gillon, as was much of this side of the street. By 1794 a subsequent owner, Michael Lajonchere, leased the site to fellow French merchant Stephen Lefevre. By 1803 directories show Lefevre's place of business as Nichols Wharf (later Accomodation Wharf) lying nearly behind this building. In 1834 Lefevre, or his son and heir, then living in Paris, sold the property to Nathaniel Fields. The new owner probably added the stucco window surrounds and possibly the wrought-iron window grills. An early-20th century owner removed a pantiled, hipped roof with three dormers, replacing it with the stepped parapet. From 1916 to 1951 this served as the wholesale grocery of E.F.A. Wieters and Sons, yet another of the German-owned businesses of this type along East Bay Street. File contains newspaper articles (including DYKYC); building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; Rosen and Associates inspection report (2000).
