Scope and Content

188 East Bay Street was constructed ca. 1800 by Francis Depau. A significant structure within the complex of 19th and 20th century commercial/warehouse structures located adjacent to the Charleston waterfront, traditionally used by businesses serving the waterfront trade. A 3-story brick structure with a floored garret covered by a hipped standing seam metal roof. The principal west facade is 3 bays wide and retains its historic stucco finished, scored to resemble cut stone. 192 East Bay Street was constructed by 1835 as a "three story brick range" in which a variety of commercial establishments related to the wharf activity were housed. Also includes a 1-story shed addition that "Ls" around the adjacent property at 188 East Bay Street; the shed was begun in 1934. The main building is a large 3-story brick structure containing over 18,000 square feet of warehouse area. It has a hipped standing seam metal roof. The principal west facade is 4 bays wide and has a stucco finish, scored to resemble cut stone. File contains partial copy of Part I certification (National Register) form for 188 East Bay Street; partial copy of Part I certification (National Register) form for 192 East Bay Street; Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection reports (1998, 2000, 2003, 2009).
