EBAY.234.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1906-10; rehabilitated 1984. Thomas W. Carroll, the son of an English immigrant stevedore, established an icehouse and fish business on this site in 1895. When his ice concern was purchased by Southern Ice Company, he continued to sell fish at the same location. The present brick structure just north of the corner, with arched windows and simple brick banding, was built by Carroll between 1906 and 1910. Wooden buildings on the corner were torn down for parking in the 1970s, and after the Carroll family closed the company in 1984, this street front site was developed with a modern office building connected to the earlier structure. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
The easement covers the entire parcel including the historic building at 24 North Market Street, which was the site of R.T. Daniel Fresh & Salt Water Fish, northeast corner of Market Street and East Bay Street.
Gift Folder contains documentation of the easement on the property including the Deed of Conservation Easement, related correspondence, and Confirmation of Understanding.
Management Folder contains annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property.
Historical/Miscellaneous Folder 1 contains newspaper articles; artist rendering of the building; plat.
Historical Miscellaneous Folder 2 contains submissions to the BAR and the BZA (1982-1984), which support that the original use of the non-historic building on the property covered by HCF's easement was offices. These were obtained the City Records Management Division (microfilm). PDFs available on CD and External Hard Drive.
Historical/Miscellaneous Folder 3 contains documentation of the zoning dispute that led to HCF's initiation of a lawsuit.
Historic/Miscellaneous Folder 4 contains documentation of the lawsuit HCF vs. Carroll Building (which ended in favor of HCF).
