EBAY.241.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1871; rehabilitated with an addition 1985-1986. A ship's chandler completed the stuccoed masonry dwelling on this site shortly after acquiring the property from merchant Moses Hyams, who had lost his buildings here in the fire of 1861. Sylvester Jancovitch had immigrated to Charleston from Austria in the early-1850s and died shortly after completing his handsome late-Greek Revival store and residence. The three-bay facade features a belt course between floors, decorative window heads, and a corbeled brick cornice surmounted by a parapeted gable. The building was the subject of a historic rehabilitation in 1986, at which point the contemporary addition to the north was constructed and joined to the original edifice by a stucco and glass hyphen. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; correspondence designating the building as contributing to the historic district; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; handwritten (staff) chain-of-title research notes (scant); newspaper article (DYKYC); plat.
