EBAY.290.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1914; rehabilitated 1979-1980. This yellow-brick freight warehouse built by the Seaboard Coastline Railway was part of a line of structures to the northeast that served as the railway terminus for the Charleston Port. A spur rail line formerly ran in front of this building. The station was ingeniously adapted in recent years as a downtown supermarket, just as the former Leland Moore Paint and Oil Company at 272 East Bay Street was adapted as an inn and corporate offices, and 279 East Bay Street, a former cotton warehouse, was rehabilitated as a shop. Although the area surrounding remains an active part of the State Ports Authority operation, most of the older structures in the area have disappeared. Some sixty acres to the east comprise the Union Pier, one of four SPA terminals and an area slated for long-term redevelopment.
