EBAY.311.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1809; rehabilitated 1971; restored late-1980s. Another important Federal doorway surmounted by an elliptical fanlight provides the main entrance for this tall masonry dwelling at the corner of East Bay and Laurens Streets. Stephen Shrewsbury, member of a family of shipwrights and himself a carpenter, rose to be clerk of the South Carolina Bank by 1796 and acquired this lot in 1800 from a grocer. By 1809 he had completed this house and moved to the site. Used for many years as an office, it is again a single family dwelling, although the former kitchen dependency, now 42 Laurens Street, was subdivided and renovated as a separate residence. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
