317 East Bay Street (Benjamin Dupre House)Entry/Object ID
EBAY.317.1Scope and Content
Constructed circa 1803-05; rehabilitated 1985. A prosperous tailor constructed this weatherboarded single house before 1805. Like the Shrewsbury House, it is raised on a high foundation and its principal rooms are on the upper floors. The staircase is lit by an original Venetian (Palladian) window and much of the interior woodwork has survived. The house was restored in 1985 as an inn, and two other houses were moved, one to the rear of this site facing George Street and another to the adjoining lot at 315 East Bay Street, where only a rear brick kitchen dependency had survived. These two wooden single houses, brought from the north side of Calhoun Street ahead of demolition, were built in the 1830s and have been rehabilitated as part of the inn complex. The house was originally at 40 Calhoun Street, relocated to the current address.
