EBAY.328.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1839; rehabilitated 1962, 1986. A dry goods merchant with a shop at 188 King Street apparently built this 2½ story brick single house on the site of an earlier, similar dwelling that had been constructed in the 1790s by Philip Gadsden. Philip was the son of Gen. Christopher Gadsden, who lived next door and developed the surrounding village of Middlesex. The house has notable brickwork with quoining, belt coursing, dogtooth cornice, and pedimented gable, and the finish gives indication of the application of a late-19th century red paint to the surface. After her husband's death in 1853, Anna Moffett lived here until the Civil War when she sold it to the Siegnious family for rental property; it retained this use until its recent renovation as an inn. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
