Constructed ca. 1817; remodeled with new facade ca. 1840. The site of several banks between 1817 and 1861, this structure became the office of the newly merged newspapers The News and Courier and served as their offices until 1902. The lower portion of the Greek Revival facade of this building still survives, while the granite entablature was destroyed in the earthquake of 1886. The engaged pedimented portico with laurel wreath frieze and the side pilasters are of granite, while the rest of the building is a severe stuccoed brick. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains description of The News and Courier with photo from "Resources & Attractions of Charleston" (ca. 1898); HCF memoranda regarding opposition to BZA appeal (2004); captioned photograph from book of 19 Broad Street and 134 Columbus Street.
