Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1817; altered ca. 1840-50. In 1817 Robert Primerose constructed a new brick single house on a high basement on this lot, the former site of Christopher Gadsden's own residence. Primerose was an auctioneer and resident on the site, according to the directory of 1822. Although the house largely retains its Federal style elements, including the pediment projecting from the roof and the fine entry doorway with fanlight, the piazza and elliptical front portico are Greek Revival additions as are the French doors on all levels of the piazza side. A mid-19th century owner added the brick gates with brownstone caps, the marble steps and the unusual cast-iron gas torchères topping the stair newels. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Files contain documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the covenant (including right-of-first-refusal); documentation of the sale of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence and other documentation related to the management of the property; documentation of HCF's purchase, rehabilitation, use as rental property, and sale of the property, including invoices from the DeCosta Company; house history from Vernacular Architecture of Charleston; brief narrative histories; newspaper articles (including 1961 DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; copy of HCF covenant information card; Hurricane Hugo Damage Assessment Survey (PDF on Media tab); excerpt from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book (20th c residents) (PDF on Media tab). See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
