EBAY.332.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1817; altered ca. 1840-50. In 1817 Robert Primerose constructed a new brick single house on a high basement on this lot, the former site of Christopher Gadsden's own residence. Primerose was an auctioneer and resident on the site, according to the directory of 1822. Although the house largely retains its Federal style elements, including the pediment projecting from the roof and the fine entry doorway with fanlight, the piazza and elliptical front portico are Greek Revival additions as are the French doors on all levels of the piazza side. A mid-19th century owner added the brick gates with brownstone caps, the marble steps and the unusual cast-iron gas torchères topping the stair newels. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
