Constructed ca. 1890s, this old railway freight station running along the eastern side of East Bay Street (552-556 East Bay Street) served many purposes, and ultimately ended up as a huge flea market building. It housed a restaurant, numerous gift booths, and the Atlantic Brokerage Company when it burned to the ground in February, 1988. (Old Codgers Charleston Address Book.)
No building history on file. Needs further research.
File contains letter dated 3/21/1968 from Charles W. Woodward to the Bishop of SC about potential use of the unused lot owned by Atlantic Coastline as a playground in a "colored neighborhood," and accompanying sketch of property; newspaper articles about the 1988 fire; occupancy history from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book.Collection
