Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1793-1800; rehabilitated, 1947, 1990. The baker George Gibbs, owner of the ca. 1802 tenement to the east, rebuilt on this site a few years earlier, constructing a substantial stuccoed brick house of three stories. He bequeathed the building to his daughter Caroline Gibbs Blackwood, who lived here for some years before moving to Montagu Street, where she and her husband John Blackwood had extensive properties. The enclosure of the arched entry occurred in the first restoration of 1947; this open passage formerly led to a rear staircase to the residence above. The wrought-iron lunette in the arch is a particularly noted example of post Revolutionary Charleston ironwork. The first floor, originally a commercial space, retains much of its old woodwork, including cypress sheathing. It was renovated as part of the residence and contains the dining room and kitchen with a new staircase accessing the original rooms above. File contains FOH house histories (1991 and one from early tour booklet); FOH(?) house history of "The Jupp House" (undated, unattributed); brief history of 8-22 Elliott Street (source not indicated); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston.
