EXCHANGE.017-19.1Scope and Content
It is possible that the walls of 17-19 Exchange Street survive from a building constructed on this site before 1788 on a thoroughfare that came to be known as Champney's Alley after that family's adjacent wharf. By 1829 Charles Edmonston acquired this and other properties in the immediate vicinity to support a growing import-export business. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house history of 19 Exchange (undated); report entitled "17-19 Exchange Street, Partly Before 1788, Partly 1829" (Louis Green, undated); description of Exchange Street and 20th occupancy history from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book; Sanborn Maps.
