GADSDEN.019.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1828-30; restored 1957. Thomas Hamlin, a planter whose family was prominent in Christ Church Parish and who later owned Snee Farm Plantation (built 1820), built this 1½ story single house on a raised brick basement in the Greek Revival style in the late 1820s. Hamlin's house was the first to be built on Gadsden Street above Wentworth and originally had a spectacular view of the Ashley River, thus accounting for the influences of plantation-style architecture on the house. Resembling the more typical planters' houses found east of the Cooper River, the dwelling has a front piazza, a gable roof with 3 dormers, and 2 chimney stacks projecting from the ridge of the roof. On the interior this compact version of the Charleston double house had 4 heated rooms on each floor divided by a central hall. This may have been built as a summer residence for the Hamlins, as it was placed on the notably healthy western edge of the city.
