4 George Street (James W. Brown House)Entry/Object ID
GEORGE.004.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1852; renovated with a new addition late-1980s. This substantial 2-story brick house stands on a lot that was conveyed to James W. Brown, a ship grocer and commission merchant. Through the heaviness of its columns and its simple window and door moldings, it is reflective of the solid simplicity of Greek Revival style. The brickwork is of importance because of its tuckpointed surface: red mortar has been used between the irregularly shaped bricks; the mortar has then been scored or grooved; and a white mortar then has been "ruled in" to provide a straight, regular appearance.
File contains FOHG house history (undated); newspaper articles (including 1971 DYKYC); photocopy of photograph (ARP photo).Collection
